On "Anecdote"

Adam Plunkett

I was moved by the whole portfolio, especially the gouaches of hills and skies and bodylike columns and columnar bodies in blues and browns and piercing red. Those have really stuck with me for something about the way they capture—what, exactly? Intensification? A sharpening of focus that is also a sharpening of some kind of emotional investment, all counterpoised against the whiteness of the page like cloud or void, drawn together by the  piercing red line that is the tracing of a portal or something somehow artificial and wrought by one’s own imagination…I’ve been seeing those shapes and that palette in my own acts of looking ever since…
